IPR002189

Description

IPR002189 is a F-actin-capping protein subunit alpha.

The F-actin capping protein binds in a calcium-independent manner to the fast growing ends of actin filaments (barbed end) thereby blocking the exchange of subunits at these ends. Unlike gelsolin and severin this protein does not sever actin filaments. The F-actin capping protein is a heterodimer composed of two unrelated subunits: alpha and beta (see [interpro:IPR001698]). Neither of the subunits shows sequence similarity to other filament-capping proteins [[cite:PUB00002626]].

This entry represent the alpha subunit (CAPZA), which is a protein of about 268 to 286 amino acid residues whose sequence is well conserved in eukaryotic species [[cite:PUB00000981]]. In Drosophila mutations in the alpha and beta subunits cause actin accumulation and subsequent retinal degeneration [[cite:PUB00071410]]. In humans CAPZA is part of the WASH complex that controls the fission of endosomes [[cite:PUB00054152]].

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Cellular component F-actin capping protein complex A heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta subunits that binds to and caps the barbed ends of actin filaments, thereby regulating the polymerization of actin monomers but not severing actin filaments.
Biological process Barbed-end actin filament capping The binding of a protein or protein complex to the barbed (or plus) end of an actin filament, thus preventing the addition, exchange or removal of further actin subunits.
