IPR002587

Description

IPR002587 is a Myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase.

Myo-inositol 1-phosphate synthase ([ec:5.5.1.4]), also known as Inositol-3-phosphate synthase 1 (INO1), is a key enzyme in myo-inositol biosynthesis pathway that catalyses the conversion of glucose 6-phosphate to 1D-myo-inositol 3-phosphate in a NAD-dependent manner [[cite:PUB00106885], [cite:PUB00101379]]. The enzyme exists in a cytoplasmic form in a wide range of plants, animals, and fungi. It has also been detected in several bacteria and a chloroplast form is observed in alga and higher plants. Inositol phosphates play an important role in signal transduction.

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Baker's yeast), the transcriptional regulation of the INO1 gene has been studied in detail [[cite:PUB00005654]] and its expression is sensitive to the availability of phospholipid precursors as well as growth phase. The regulation of the structural gene encoding 1L-myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase has also been analysed at the transcriptional level in the aquatic angiosperm, Spirodela polyrrhiza (Giant duckweed) and the halophyte, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum (Common ice plant) [[cite:PUB00006393]].

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Molecular function Inositol-3-phosphate synthase activity Catalysis of the reaction: D-glucose 6-phosphate = 1D-myo-inositol 3-phosphate. This reaction requires NAD, which dehydrogenates the CHOH group to CO at C-5 of the glucose 6-phosphate, making C-6 into an active methylene, able to condense with the aldehyde at C-1. Finally, the enzyme-bound NADH reconverts C-5 into the CHOH form.
Biological process Inositol biosynthetic process The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the formation of inositol, 1,2,3,4,5,6-cyclohexanehexol, a growth factor for animals and microorganisms.
Biological process Phospholipid biosynthetic process The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the formation of phospholipids, any lipid containing phosphoric acid as a mono- or diester.
