IPR020789 is a RNA polymerases, subunit N, zinc binding site.
<p>In eukaryotes, there are three different forms of DNA-dependent RNA polymerases ([ec:2.7.7.6]) transcribing different sets of genes. Each class of RNA polymerase is an assemblage of ten to twelve different polypeptides. In archaebacteria, there is generally a single form of RNA polymerase which also consists of an oligomeric assemblage of 10 to 13 polypeptides. Archaebacterial subunit N (gene rpoN) [[cite:PUB00004866]] is a small protein of about 8kDa, it is evolutionary related [[cite:PUB00002250]] to a 8.3kDa component shared by all three forms of eukaryotic RNA polymerases (gene RPB10 in yeast and POLR2J in mammals) as well as to African swine fever virus (ASFV) protein CP80R [[cite:PUB00015097]].</p> <p>This signature spans the conserved region, which is located at the N-terminal extremity of these polymerase subunits; this region contains two cysteines that binds a zinc ion [[cite:PUB00015096]].</p>

GO term | Namespace | Name | Definition | Relationships |
---|---|---|---|---|
Molecular function | DNA binding | Any molecular function by which a gene product interacts selectively and non-covalently with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). | ||
Molecular function | DNA-directed 5'-3' RNA polymerase activity | Catalysis of the reaction: nucleoside triphosphate + RNA(n) = diphosphate + RNA(n+1). Utilizes a DNA template, i.e. the catalysis of DNA-template-directed extension of the 3'-end of an RNA strand by one nucleotide at a time. Can initiate a chain 'de novo'. | ||
Biological process | Transcription, DNA-templated | The cellular synthesis of RNA on a template of DNA. | ||
Molecular function | Zinc ion binding | Interacting selectively and non-covalently with zinc (Zn) ions. |
