GO:0005905

Overview

Field Value
Namespace Cellular component
Short description Clathrin-coated pit
Full defintion A part of the endomembrane system in the form of an invagination of a membrane upon which a clathrin coat forms, and that can be converted by vesicle budding into a clathrin-coated vesicle. Coated pits form on the plasma membrane, where they are involved in receptor-mediated selective transport of many proteins and other macromolecules across the cell membrane, in the trans-Golgi network, and on some endosomes.

Rhythmic cycle of clathrin-coated pit formation at the trans-golgi network in human MDA-MB-435 cells.
Biosci Biotechnol Biochem. ; 71 (2): 571–4.PMID: 17284835

We studied the in vivo dynamics of enhanced green fluorescent protein-tagged clathrin light chain a (GFP-CLCa) at the trans-Golgi network (TGN) in MDA-MB-435 cells. The intensity of fluorescence signals of GFP-CLCa periodically increased and decreased at the TGN approximately every 100 s. This suggests that the formation of clathrin-coated pits occurs synchronously and periodically at the TGN.
