IPR018189

Description

IPR018189 is a Phosphoglucose isomerase, conserved site.

Phosphoglucose isomerase ([ec:5.3.1.9]) (PGI) [[cite:PUB00004511], [cite:PUB00003422]] is a dimeric enzyme that catalyses the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate. PGI is involved in different pathways: in most higher organisms it is involved in glycolysis; in mammals it is involved in gluconeogenesis; in plants in carbohydrate biosynthesis; in some bacteria it provides a gateway for fructose into the Entner-Doudouroff pathway. The multifunctional protein, PGI, is also known as neuroleukin (a neurotrophic factor that mediates the differentiation of neurons), autocrine motility factor (a tumour-secreted cytokine that regulates cell motility), differentiation and maturation mediator and myofibril-bound serine proteinase inhibitor, and has different roles inside and outside the cell. In the cytoplasm, it catalyses the second step in glycolysis, while outside the cell it serves as a nerve growth factor and cytokine [[cite:PUB00006471]].

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Molecular function Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase activity Catalysis of the reaction: D-glucose 6-phosphate = D-fructose 6-phosphate.
Biological process Gluconeogenesis The formation of glucose from noncarbohydrate precursors, such as pyruvate, amino acids and glycerol.
Biological process Glycolytic process The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the breakdown of a carbohydrate into pyruvate, with the concomitant production of a small amount of ATP and the reduction of NAD(P) to NAD(P)H. Glycolysis begins with the metabolism of a carbohydrate to generate products that can enter the pathway and ends with the production of pyruvate. Pyruvate may be converted to acetyl-coenzyme A, ethanol, lactate, or other small molecules.
