IPR033661

Description

IPR033661 is a Phosphatidylserine decarboxylase, eukaryotic type 1.

A non-mitochondrial type I phosphatidylserine decarboxylase has been identified in Plasmodium falciparum [[cite:PUB00079956]].

This entry represents the eukaryotic type 1 subfamily.

Phosphatidylserine decarboxylase plays a pivotal role in the synthesis of phospholipid by the mitochondria. The substrate phosphatidylserine is synthesized extramitochondrially and must be translocated to the mitochondria prior to decarboxylation [[cite:PUB00008264]]. Phosphatidylserine decarboxylases [ec:4.1.1.65] is responsible for conversion of phosphatidylserine to phosphatidylethanolamine and plays a central role in the biosynthesis of aminophospholipids [[cite:PUB00008265]].

Phosphatidylserine decarboxylases (PSDs) have been classified in two types. Type I PSDs include enzymes of eukaryotic mitochondria and bacterial origin which contain the amino acid sequence LGST as a characteristic motif. Type II PSDs are found in the endomembrane system of eukaryotes and contain a typical GGST motif. These characteristic motifs are considered as autocatalytic cleavage sites where proenzymes are split into alpha and beta subunits [[cite:PUB00078006]].

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Molecular function Phosphatidylserine decarboxylase activity Catalysis of the reaction: H(+) + phosphatidyl-L-serine = CO(2) + phosphatidylethanolamine.
Cellular component Mitochondrion A semiautonomous, self replicating organelle that occurs in varying numbers, shapes, and sizes in the cytoplasm of virtually all eukaryotic cells. It is notably the site of tissue respiration.
