IPR000846

Description

IPR000846 is a Dihydrodipicolinate reductase, N-terminal.

Dihydrodipicolinate reductase catalyzes the second step in the biosynthesis of diaminopimelic acid and lysine, the NAD or NADP-dependent reduction of 2,3-dihydrodipicolinate into 2,3,4,5-tetrahydrodipicolinate [[cite:PUB00019387], [cite:PUB00019388], [cite:PUB00000417]].

In Escherichia coli and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, dihydrodipicolinate reductase has equal specificity for NADH and NADPH, however in Thermotoga maritima there it has a greater affinity for NADPH [[cite:PUB00043321]]. In addition, the enzyme is inhibited by high concentrations of its substrate, which consequently acts as a feedback control on the lysine biosynthesis pathway. In T. maritima, the enzyme also lacks N-terminal and C-terminal loops which are present in enzyme of the former two organisms.

This entry represents the N-terminal domain of dihydrodipicolinate reductase which binds the dinucleotide NAD(P)H.

Molecular function 4-hydroxy-tetrahydrodipicolinate reductase Catalysis of the reaction: (S)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate + NAD(P)+ + H2O = (2S,4S)-4-hydroxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydrodipicolinate + NAD(P)H + H+.
Biological process Lysine biosynthetic process via diaminopimelate The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the formation of lysine, via the intermediate diaminopimelate.
Biological process Oxidation-reduction process A metabolic process that results in the removal or addition of one or more electrons to or from a substance, with or without the concomitant removal or addition of a proton or protons.
