IPR004374

Description

IPR004374 is a Peptide chain release factor 2.

<p>Peptide chain release factors (RFs) are required for the termination of protein biosynthesis [[cite:PUB00004944]]. At present two classes of RFs can be distinguished. Class I RFs bind to ribosomes that have encountered a stop codon at their decoding site and induce release of the nascent polypeptide. Class II RFs are GTP-binding proteins that interact with class I RFs and enhance class I RF activity. In prokaryotes there are two class I RFs that act in a codon specific manner [[cite:PUB00003804]]: RF-1 (gene prfA) mediates UAA and UAG-dependent termination while RF-2 (gene prfB), which is represented by this entry, mediates UAA and UGA-dependent termination. RF-1 and RF-2 are structurally and evolutionary related proteins which have been shown [[cite:PUB00004407]] to be part of a larger family.</p> <p>This entry represents peptide chain release factor 2 (PrfB, RF-2). It also includes chloroplastic release factor PrfB, which is required for the proper translation and stability of UGA-containing transcripts in chloroplasts [[cite:PUB00085742]].</p>

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Cellular component Cytoplasm All of the contents of a cell excluding the plasma membrane and nucleus, but including other subcellular structures.
Biological process Translational termination The process resulting in the release of a polypeptide chain from the ribosome, usually in response to a termination codon (UAA, UAG, or UGA in the universal genetic code).
Molecular function Translation release factor activity, codon specific A translation release factor that is specific for one or more particular termination codons; acts at the ribosomal A-site and require polypeptidyl-tRNA at the P-site.
