IPR020937

Description

IPR020937 is a SecA conserved site.

Secretion across the inner membrane in some Gram-negative bacteria occurs via the preprotein translocase pathway. Proteins are produced in the cytoplasm as precursors, and require a chaperone subunit to direct them to the translocase component [[cite:PUB00007064]]. From there, the mature proteins are either targeted to the outer membrane, or remain as periplasmic proteins. The translocase protein subunits are encoded on the bacterial chromosome.

The translocase itself comprises 7 proteins, including a chaperone protein (SecB), an ATPase (SecA), an integral membrane complex (SecCY, SecE and SecG), and two additional membrane proteins that promote the release of the mature peptide into the periplasm (SecD and SecF) [[cite:PUB00007064]]. The chaperone protein SecB [[cite:PUB00007065]] is a highly acidic homotetrameric protein that exists as a "dimer of dimers" in the bacterial cytoplasm. SecB maintains preproteins in an unfolded state after translation, and targets these to the peripheral membrane protein ATPase SecA for secretion [[cite:PUB00007066]].

SecA is a cytoplasmic protein of 800 to 960 amino acid residues. Homologues of secA are also encoded in the chloroplast genome of some algae [[cite:PUB00003757]] as well as in the nuclear genome of plants [[cite:PUB00001687]]. It could be involved in the intraorganellar protein transport into thylakoids.

The signature pattern of this entry is located in the C-terminal region of the RecA-like domain.

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Biological process Protein targeting The process of targeting specific proteins to particular regions of the cell, typically membrane-bounded subcellular organelles. Usually requires an organelle specific protein sequence motif.
Biological process Intracellular protein transport The directed movement of proteins in a cell, including the movement of proteins between specific compartments or structures within a cell, such as organelles of a eukaryotic cell.
Cellular component Membrane A lipid bilayer along with all the proteins and protein complexes embedded in it an attached to it.
