IPR039191 is a Nopp140-like.

This entry includes mammalian NOLC1 (also known as Nopp140) and its orthologue dao-5 from C.elegans. They are nucleolar proteins that contain a central domain consisting of ten repeats of acidic serine clusters alternating with lysine-, alanine- and proline-rich basic stretches [[cite:PUB00089268]]. Human NOLC1 interacts with casein kinase 2 (CK2), RNA polymerase I, p80 coilin , NAP57, and both major classes (box H/ACA and box C/D) of snoRNPs [[cite:PUB00089268]]. It acts as a regulator of RNA polymerase I by connecting RNA polymerase I with enzymes responsible for ribosomal processing and modification [[cite:PUB00089266], [cite:PUB00089267]].

Mutations of the Dao-5 gene alters rDNA transcription and increases germ cell apoptosis in C. elegans [[cite:PUB00090161]]. It binds to RNA polymerase I and rDNA and is required for efficient RNA polymerase I-mediated rDNA transcription. It also plays a role in the modulation of nucleolus size [[cite:PUB00155152]].

Cellular component | Nucleolus | A small, dense body one or more of which are present in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. It is rich in RNA and protein, is not bounded by a limiting membrane, and is not seen during mitosis. Its prime function is the transcription of the nucleolar DNA into 45S ribosomal-precursor RNA, the processing of this RNA into 5.8S, 18S, and 28S components of ribosomal RNA, and the association of these components with 5S RNA and proteins synthesized outside the nucleolus. This association results in the formation of ribonucleoprotein precursors; these pass into the cytoplasm and mature into the 40S and 60S subunits of the ribosome. |
