IPR011515

Description

IPR011515 is a Shugoshin, C-terminal.

This entry represents the C-terminal domain of Shugoshin (Sgo1) kinetochore-attachment proteins. Shugoshin has a conserved coiled-coil N-terminal domain and a highly conserved C-terminal basic region ([interpro:IPR011516]). Shugoshin is a crucial target of Bub1 kinase that plays a central role in chromosome cohesion during mitosis and meiosis divisions by preventing premature dissociation of cohesin complex from centromeres after prophase, when most of cohesin complex dissociates from chromosomes arms [[cite:PUB00014798], [cite:PUB00044772]]. Shugoshin is thought to act by protecting Rec8 and Rad21 at the centromeres from separase degradation during anaphase I (during meiosis) so that sister chromatids remain tethered [[cite:PUB00014798]]. Shugoshin also acts as a spindle checkpoint component required for sensing tension between sister chromatids during mitosis, its degradation when they separate preventing cell cycle arrest and chromosome loss in anaphase, a time when sister chromatids are no longer under tension. Human shugoshin is diffusible and mediates kinetochore-driven formation of kinetochore-microtubules during bipolar spindle assembly [[cite:PUB00044773]]. Further, the primary role of shugoshin is to ensure bipolar attachment of kinetochores, and its role in protecting cohesion has co-developed to facilitate this process [[cite:PUB00044774]].

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Cellular component Chromosome, centromeric region The region of a chromosome that includes the centromeric DNA and associated proteins. In monocentric chromosomes, this region corresponds to a single area of the chromosome, whereas in holocentric chromosomes, it is evenly distributed along the chromosome.
Cellular component Nucleus A membrane-bounded organelle of eukaryotic cells in which chromosomes are housed and replicated. In most cells, the nucleus contains all of the cell's chromosomes except the organellar chromosomes, and is the site of RNA synthesis and processing. In some species, or in specialized cell types, RNA metabolism or DNA replication may be absent.
Biological process Meiotic chromosome segregation The process in which genetic material, in the form of chromosomes, is organized into specific structures and then physically separated and apportioned to two or more sets during M phase of the meiotic cell cycle.
