IPR005067

Description

IPR005067 is a Fatty acid desaturase, type 2.

Fatty acid desaturases are enzymes that catalyse the insertion of a double bond at the delta position of fatty acids.

There seem to be two distinct families of fatty acid desaturases which do not seem to be evolutionary related.

Family 1 is composed of:

Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) ([ec:1.14.19.1]) [[cite:PUB00002505]].

Family 2 is composed of:

Bacterial fatty acid desaturases.

Plant stearoyl-acyl-carrier-protein desaturase ([ec:1.14.19.1]) [[cite:PUB00004734]], this enzyme catalyses the introduction of a double bond at the delta(9) position of steraoyl-ACP to produce oleoyl-ACP. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of saturated fatty acids to unsaturated fatty acids in the synthesis of vegetable oils.

Cyanobacterial DesA [[cite:PUB00004074]], an enzyme that can introduce a second cis double bond at the delta(12) position of fatty acid bound to membranes glycerolipids. DesA is involved in chilling tolerance; the phase transition temperature of lipids of cellular membranes being dependent on the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids of the membrane lipids.

This entry contains fatty acid desaturases belonging to Family 2, also known as Acyl-ACP (Acyl Carrier Protein) desaturases.

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Biological process Fatty acid metabolic process The chemical reactions and pathways involving fatty acids, aliphatic monocarboxylic acids liberated from naturally occurring fats and oils by hydrolysis.
Molecular function Acyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] desaturase activity Catalysis of the reaction: stearoyl-[acyl-carrier protein] + reduced acceptor + O2 = oleoyl-[acyl-carrier protein] + acceptor + H2O. The enzyme requires ferredoxin.
Biological process Oxidation-reduction process A metabolic process that results in the removal or addition of one or more electrons to or from a substance, with or without the concomitant removal or addition of a proton or protons.
