IPR012588 is a Exosome-associated factor Rrp6, N-terminal.

Exosomes are nano-compartments that function in the degradation or processing of RNA (including mRNA, rRNA, snRNA and snoRNA) [[cite:PUB00035568], [cite:PUB00035569]]. Exosomes occur in both archaea and eukaryotes, and have a similar overall structure to each other and to bacterial/organelle PNPases (polynucleotide phosphorylases; [ec:2.7.7.8]) [[cite:PUB00035567], [cite:PUB00094334]], consisting of a barrel structure composed of a hexameric ring of PH domains that act as a degradation chamber, and an S1-domain/KH-domain containing cap that binds the RNA substrate (and sometimes accessory proteins) in order to regulate and restrict entry into the degradation chamber [[cite:PUB00035570]]. There are two types of exosomes in eukaryotes, cytoplasmic exosomes that are responsible for 3'-5' exoribonuclease degradation of mRNAs, and nuclear exosomes that degrade pre-mRNAs (such as nonsense transcripts) and degrade rRNAs, snRNAs and snoRNAs. Unstructured RNA substrates feed in through the pore made by the S1 domains, are degraded by the PH domain ring, and exit as nucleotides via the PH pore at the opposite end of the barrel [[cite:PUB00035571], [cite:PUB00035572]].

Cellular component | Nuclear exosome (RNase complex) | A ribonuclease complex that has 3-prime to 5-prime processive and distributive hydrolytic exoribonuclease activity and endoribonuclease activity, producing 5-prime-phosphomonoesters. Participates in a multitude of cellular RNA processing and degradation events preventing nuclear export and/or translation of aberrant RNAs. Restricted to processing linear and circular single-stranded RNAs (ssRNA) only. RNAs with complex secondary structures may have to be unwound or pre-processed by co-factors prior to entering the complex, esp if the 3-prime end is structured. | ||
Biological process | RNA processing | Any process involved in the conversion of one or more primary RNA transcripts into one or more mature RNA molecules. |
