IPR000705 is a Galactokinase.
<p>Galactokinase catalyses the first reaction in the galactose metabolism pathway, the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of galactose, yielding galactose-1-phosphate [[cite:PUB00003653], [cite:PUB00004765]]. Deficiency in this enzyme results in the disease galactosemia, which is responsible for the formation of cataracts in newborn babies, and is possibly responsible for presenile cataracts in adults [[cite:PUB00004765]]. In yeast, the GAL3 gene product is required for the GAL4-mediated induction of other enzymes involved in galactose metabolism. The induction of GAL1 production then reinforces this process, increasing the expression of other galactose-inducible genes. GAL3 has been shown to be similar to the GAL1 protein [[cite:PUB00003653]].</p>

GO term | Namespace | Name | Definition | Relationships |
---|---|---|---|---|
Molecular function | Galactokinase activity | Catalysis of the reaction: D-galactose + ATP = alpha-D-galactose 1-phosphate + ADP + 2 H(+). | ||
Molecular function | ATP binding | Interacting selectively and non-covalently with ATP, adenosine 5'-triphosphate, a universally important coenzyme and enzyme regulator. | ||
Biological process | Galactose metabolic process | The chemical reactions and pathways involving galactose, the aldohexose galacto-hexose. D-galactose is widely distributed in combined form in plants, animals and microorganisms as a constituent of oligo- and polysaccharides; it also occurs in galactolipids and as its glucoside in lactose and melibiose. | ||
Biological process | Carbohydrate phosphorylation | The process of introducing a phosphate group into a carbohydrate, any organic compound based on the general formula Cx(H2O)y. |
