<p>This entry represents a conserved region approximately 250 residues long located towards the C terminus of eukaryotic Ataxin-2. Ataxin-2 is a protein involved in EGFR trafficking, acting as negative regulator of endocytic EGFR internalization at the plasma membrane [[cite:PUB00077680]]. Variations in the gene encoding for this proteins are related to spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), a late-onset neurodegenerative disorder [[cite:PUB00012812], [cite:PUB00077681]]. The expanded polyglutamine repeat in ataxin-2 causes disruption of the normal morphology of the Golgi complex and increased incidence of cell death [[cite:PUB00012813]]. It has also been related to a type of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) [[cite:PUB00151918]]. Ataxin-2 is predicted to consist of mostly non-globular domains [[cite:PUB00012814]]. This region is also found in other eukaryotic proteins, including human Polyadenylate-binding protein-interacting protein 2, which acts as a repressor in the regulation of translation initiation of poly(A)-containing mRNAs [[cite:PUB00090910]].</p>
