IPR018238

Description

IPR018238 is a Glycoside hydrolase, family 14, conserved site.

O-Glycosyl hydrolases ([ec:3.2.1.]) are a widespread group of enzymes that hydrolyse the glycosidic bond between two or more carbohydrates, or between a carbohydrate and a non-carbohydrate moiety. A classification system for glycosyl hydrolases, based on sequence similarity, has led to the definition of 85 different families [[cite:PUB00004870], [cite:PUB00005266]]. This classification is available on the CAZy (CArbohydrate-Active EnZymes) website.

Glycoside hydrolase family 14 [cazy:GH14] comprises enzymes with only one known activity; beta-amylase ([ec:3.2.1.2]). A Glu residue has been proposed as a catalytic residue, but it is not known if it is the nucleophile or the proton donor.

Associated GO terms

GO predictions are based solely on the InterPro-to-GO mappings published by EMBL-EBI, which are in turn based on the mapping of predicted domains to the InterPro dataset. The InterPro-to-GO mapping was last updated on , while the GO metadata was last updated on .

GO term Namespace Name Definition Relationships
Biological process Polysaccharide catabolic process The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the breakdown of a polysaccharide, a polymer of many (typically more than 10) monosaccharide residues linked glycosidically.
Molecular function Beta-amylase activity Catalysis of the reaction: (1,4-alpha-D-glucosyl)(n+1) + H2O = (1,4-alpha-D-glucosyl)(n-1) + alpha-maltose. This reaction is the hydrolysis of 1,4-alpha-glucosidic linkages in polysaccharides so as to remove successive maltose units from the non-reducing ends of the chains.
